The Total Solar Eclipse

Click for map of Eclipse Path At 11.11 am precisely on Wednesday August 11th 1999, most of Cornwall and parts of Devon was plunged into near darkness, as the moon hid the sun, casting a 120 mile wide shadow on the face of the Earth, as England experienced its first Total Eclipse for nearly 70 years. Birds fell silent as an eerie stillness descended. Just before Totality, when the crescent of the sun dissapeared, leaving only a black disc showing, surrounded by the beautiful white corona, the last rays of the sun shone through the valleys of the moon- the phenomena known as Bailey's Beads. Finally one bead remained, the Diamond Ring, and Totality began. Though it was overcast the experience was thought provoking and somewhat mindblowing. Many people felt a shiver run down their spines as the moon dissapeared from view. Click on the thumbnail left for a map.

Protecting your eyes

Looking directly at the sun will cause irreparable damage to the eyes even blindness. Damage occurs without any sensation of pain or discomfort. Nor should you look at the sun through a camera, or telescope. To do so is very dangerous indeed. The safest way is to use the back projection method where you look at an image of the sun projected onto a piece of through a pinhole in another piece of card. Tempted to take pictures?. Dont, you risk causing serious damage to your eyes. Leave taking the pictures to the experts

Accommodation

Many of the hotels, guest houses, B & B's and caraven sites within the Zone of Totality still have vacancies. (As of July 1999). By shopping around there will be no need to pay the premium prices demanded by some. Lots of Official Eclipse Campsites are being set up just for the week. Getting there may be difficult. Travel early and make sure you have someone to stay before setting off

Wheres the best place to watch the Eclipse?

Though the area around St Micheals Mount on the Centreline is expected to be very crowded, nearly all of Cornwall and South Devon will experience Totality, so there are plenty of other places to choose from. Choose somewhere with a good all round view. And not a megalithic stone circle please. Even if its overcast on the day, an eclipse is still awesome, its becomes even darker!
